Frequently Asked Questions
How is an estate auction different from an estate sale?
A traditional estate sale puts a fixed price tag on every item and usually runs three to four days. But a price tag also sets a ceiling: once an item is marked $10, that is the most it will bring, even if a buyer would gladly have paid more. At auction, the market decides the value. Buyers compete item by item, and when more than one person truly wants a piece, there is no limit to how high the bidding can go. Each item sells to its highest bidder, and the entire sale is finished in one day.
What does it cost? Are there upfront fees?
No upfront fees and no out-of-pocket costs. We offer competitive commission rates, and because our commission comes from the sale proceeds, we only do well when you do. Every fee is spelled out in your written contract before we start, so there are never any surprises.
How and when do I get paid?
Once your sale is finalized, you receive an itemized settlement statement showing what each item sold for, along with your payment. Most sales are typically paid out within about a week, though sales that include vehicles or large items can take a little longer. Your exact payment terms are outlined in your written contract.
What happens to items that don’t sell?
We work hard to sell everything, and our goal is to sell 90 to 100% of every estate. Thanks to competitive bidding and our large buyer network, very little is usually left behind. If anything does remain, we can arrange a cleanout of the leftover items for an additional fee, so the home is ready for its next chapter.
Do I need to be there on auction day?
Not at all. We understand that parting with a loved one’s belongings can be overwhelming and emotional, and many families prefer to let us take it from here. If you live out of state, our turnkey service means we can handle everything from start to finish while you’re away. And if you’d like to be there to watch the magic happen, you are always welcome to attend.
Do you work with fiduciaries, attorneys and trust officers?
Yes. We are very familiar with the needs and processes of fiduciaries, probate attorneys, trust officers and executors, and we understand the responsibility that comes with managing an estate. We provide the documentation you need, including inventories, itemized sales reports and settlement statements, for court filings, accountings and your records.
How do I attend an auction as a buyer?
Check our Live Auctions page for the city and crossroads. The address posts at 6:30 AM the morning of the sale; preview starts 30 minutes before bidding. To register, just bring your driver’s license to get your bidder number. No deposit is required. We accept cash, all major credit cards, Apple Pay, Zelle and Venmo.
